FRETWORK PANELS -
We are pleased to present our fine collection of Old Chinese fretwork panels from Shanxi Province.
More than 3,000 years ago the Chinese began using wooden lattice design in their windows, ceiling or walkways. Lattice panels are often moulded or carved on one side, and left flat without carving on the back to facilitate the attachment of semi-transparent protective paper or cloth, which is replaced each year on New Year's Day. Such panels were important furnishings in Chinese households. They provided protection against the elements and privacy. They also allow a picturesque view of the garden. Nowadays, lattice panels has become one of the most extraordinary decorating elements. The doors, in hinged groups of three or more, make beautiful screens and room dividers, while the windows make beautiful wall decorations. |
