CAPTURING SERENITY – FINE BUDDHIST SCULPTURE -
Altfield Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Southeast Asian sculpture in January.
The collection includes Burmese and Thai sculpture executed in alabaster, bronze and lacquered wood, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Skilled religious artisans were employed across mainland Southeast Asia in the crafting of Buddhist images and related sculpture for both household shrines and temples, and they attained a high degree of sophistication in the techniques of carving and casting sculpture. As with all Asian sculpture, the serenity of the countenance is of primary importance, and the pieces we have selected have the peaceful and contemplative expression that is a defining characteristic of all Buddhist sculpture. We look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery as well as the Annex showroom to see the sculpture on view. |
