FINE BURMESE BUDDHIST SCULPTURE -
This May, Altfield Gallery is pleased to present a collection of fine early Buddhist sculpture from Burma.
Burmese sculptors over the centuries have worked with wood, bronze and alabaster, often using lacquer as a finishing surface, or gilding the completed sculpture. We have assembled a small group of very fine 18th and 19th century sculpture finely crafted in wood, forged in bronze, and carved from solid alabaster. The collection includes both seated and reclining figures, each selected for the serenity of their expressions. It is the calm countenance achieved in the best of Burmese sculpture that is the defining characteristic of the art form. We look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery to see the sculpture currently on view. |
