S.E. ASIAN SCULPTURE - November 2009
A fine selection of Southeast Asian sculpture is now on view in the Gallery.
The current selection includes Thai and Burmese sculpture executed in alabaster, bronze and lacquered wood, dating primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. We have tended to focus on Burmese sculpture which we believe is significantly undervalued, although good pieces are increasingly difficult to find. As with all Asian sculpture, the serenity of the countenance is of primary importance, and the pieces we have selected have the peaceful and contemplative expression that is a defining characteristic of all Buddist sculpture.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery to see the sculpture currently on view.
